The article is devoted to the study of chaotic dynamics of charged particles inside an idealized magnetic field, suggested by a tokamak type configuration. The authors propose an elegant analytical technique of detecting such behavior in planar Hamiltonian systems with a singularity. It is clearly shown that in the considered model, chaos may arise by a slow varying periodic perturbation of the magnetic moment, even in absence of a separatrix. The proofs of the given theorems are based on the monotonicity of the period map associated with the unperturbed planar system. The results obtained help to better study the nature and variety of the occurrence of chaos in dynamical systems.
