The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how program package NSPCG, developed at the Center for Numerical Analysis at the University of Texas at Austin, can be applied to solve the sparse, singular systems that arise in the analysis of continuous-time Markov chains. The technical system chosen as a case study is an integrated digital network of ISDN type. The trunk reservation scheme is used to provide service protection for one or more mixed traffic streams. For this strategy, the authors construct a Markov model of the system and solve the associated singular system of equations using a variety of iterative methods from the NSPCG package. Many numerical results are given and compared with respect to computing time and rate of convergence.
