In this paper we consider the problem of an infinitely long annular cylinder whose inner and outer surfaces are subjected to known surrounding temperatures and are traction free. The problem is in the context of generalized thermoelasticity theory with relaxation time. The Laplace transform with respect to time is used. The inversion process is caren problems are formulated. Chapter 7 and 8 are concerned with the application of variational methods to the boundary value problems of mathematical physics. Chapters 9 and 10 provide further applications. In Chapter 11, starting from the example of a vibrating viscoplastic beam the author outlines the critical point theory for non-self-adjoint operators. The paper ends with two appendices concerning Frechet differentiation and some elementary concepts of functional analysis. This book is an interesting contribution to the work of filling the gap existing between the engineering and the mathematical approach to variational problems. It can be studied with good profit by both of these categories.
