Let \(G\) be a group and \(K\) be a field of characteristic \(p\). The ghost number of the group algebra \(KG\) is defined in [\textit{S. K. Chebolu} et al., Adv. Math. 217, No. 6, 2782--2799 (2008; Zbl 1201.20049)] to be the nilpotency degree of the ideal of ghost maps (maps inducing the zero map in Tate cohomology) in the stable category of finitely generated \(KG\)-modules. Upper and lower bounds for the ghost number of a \(p\)-group are suggested as a conjecture in [\textit{J. D. Christensen} and \textit{G. Wang}, Algebr. Represent. Theory 18, No. 1, 1--33 (2015; Zbl 1331.20009)]. The aim of this paper is to discuss and to establish most cases of this conjecture.
