The Helmholtz equation appears in many physical and technical problems, and the classical boundary problems on it have been extensively studied. However in some practical problems the boundary data are not fully known and we have only an inverse problem such as the Cauchy problem, which is ill posed and must be regularized. The authors consider the following Cauchy problem: \[ \begin{aligned} \Delta u(x,y)+k^{2}u(x,y)=& 0, \quad (x,y)\in\Omega \\ u(x,y)=&f(x,y)\quad (x,y)\in\Gamma \\ \frac{\partial u(x,y)}{\partial n}=&g(x,y)\quad (x,y)\in\Gamma, \end{aligned} \] where \(f\in H^{3/2}(\Gamma), g\in H^{1/2}(\Gamma)\) and the corresponding weak formulation, \(\Gamma\) can be an open part of \(\partial\Omega\). Suppose the problem has a solution in \(H^{1}(\Omega)\). Before applying the Tikhonov regularization the Cauchy problem is transformed in a moment problem. Then an error estimate and a convergence result is given. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The paper concludes with a reference list containing 24 entries.
