A tilting theory for finite dimensional modules over finite dimensional algebras over a field was defined by \textit{S. Brenner} and \textit{M. Butler} [in Lect. Notes Math. 832, 103-169 (1980; Zbl 0446.16031)] and was developed first by \textit{D. Happel} and \textit{C. M. Ringel} [in Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 274, 399-443 (1982; Zbl 0503.16024)]. There is a generalization of the classical tilting results to arbitrary modules. In the paper by a tilting module over a ring \(R\) the authors mean a right \(R\)-module \(T\) such that (1) there is an exact sequence \(0\to R\to T'\to T''\) of right \(R\)-modules with \(T'\) and \(T''\) in \(\text{Add}(T)\), (2) \(\text{Ext}^1_A(T,T^{(\mu)})=0\) for any cardinal \(\mu\), and (3) the projective dimension of \(T\) is at most 1. If in addition \(T\) is finitely presented it is called a classical tilting module. The module \(T\) is called a partial tilting module if the conditions (2) and (3) are satisfied. The authors generalize basic results on classical tilting modules and partial tilting modules to the nonclassical case over an arbitrary ring \(R\). By generalizing the well-known lemma of Bongartz they characterize torsion theories in \(\text{Mod}(R)\) induced by (infinitely generated) tilting modules. A version of Brenner-Butler theorem and a generalization of Assem-Smalø theorem over artinian rings \(R\) are also proved.
