The paper under review considers a new cohomology theory for topological groups. There are well-known constructions of continuous and measurable cohomology groups, due to \textit{W. T. van Est} [Nederl. Akad. Wet., Proc., Ser. A 56, 484--492, 493--504 (1953; Zbl 0051.26001)] and \textit{C. C. Moore} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 221, 1--33 (1976; Zbl 0366.22005)], respectively. The construction in this paper instead considers measurable cochains which are continuous in a neighborhood of the identity, the so-constructed cohomology groups are called locally continuous measurable cohomology groups \(H^*_{lcm}(G,A)\). The main result of the paper under review is that, for locally compact, second countable topological groups \(G,A\), the second cohomology group \(H^2_{lcm}(G,A)\) parametrizes the isomorphism classes of locally split extensions \(1\rightarrow A\rightarrow E\rightarrow G\rightarrow 1\). In the category of Lie groups and smooth modules, the authors use an analogous definition of locally smooth measurable cohomology groups. The second cohomology group \(H^2_{lsm}(G,A)\) then parametrizes the isomorphism classes of locally split smooth extensions, moreover Hilbert's fifth problem implies the existence of an isomorphism \(H^2_{lsm}(G,A)\simeq H^2_{lcm}(G,A)\) and the latter injects into the second measurable cohomology.
