The paper is concerned with a singular homogeneous Dirichlet problem of type \[ F(D^2u)+p(x)u^{- \gamma}=0 \mbox{ in } \Omega, \qquad u=0 \mbox{ on } \partial \Omega, \tag{1} \] where \(\gamma >0\), the bounded domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N\) is uniformly convex and \(F\) is a continuous mapping defined on the linear space of all symmetric \(N\times N\) real matrices, which is degenerate elliptic. The gauge function \(p\) is continuous and has a growth controlled in terms of the distance to the boundary function. The main results provide sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness, as well as nonexistence of positive viscosity solutions to (1). Generalizations to equations with an additional first order term are also discussed. A key ingredient in the approach is the lower and upper solutions method.
