For an analytic function \(f\) on the unit disk \(\{z:|z|<1\}\) with \(f(0)=f^\prime(0)-1=0\), \(f(z)\neq 0\) for \(0<|z|<1\), the authors consider the power deformation \(f_c (z)=z(f(z)/z)^c\) for a complex number \(c\). They determine those values of \(c\) for which the operator \(f\mapsto f_c\) maps a specified class of univalent functions into the class of univalent functions. The functions include the well known classes of starlike, convex, \(\lambda\)-spirallike, starlike of order \(\alpha\), strongly starlike of order \(\alpha\), strongly \(\lambda\)-spirallike of order \(\alpha\) and close-to-convex functions. For many of these classes the set of values for \(c\) is described by the varability region of the quantity \(z{f^\prime(z)}/{f(z)},\;|z|<1\). A result of \textit{D. A. Brannan} and \textit{W. E. Kirwan} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 1, 431--443 (1969; Zbl 0177.33403)] that strongly spirallike functions are bounded is obtained as a by-product of the present study.
