On the work of G. Freud in the theory of interpolation of functions (Q1093825): Difference between revisions

This is a survey article dedicated to the memory of (the late) Geza Freud, a famous Hungarian mathematician. G. Freud had varied interests in the field of mathematical analysis but like many other Hungarian mathematicians, he was very much interested in the theory of interpolation. In this article the author presents his works on interpolation only. He mentions Freud's marvellous contribution to the theory of Lagrange and Hermite interpolations and to Turan's theory of lacunary interpolation. Freud's method of constructing interpolatory polynomials which leads to direct proofs of Jackson and Timan's theorems, is remarkable. It left a wide scope for further investigations which was later continued by various authors including the reviewer himself. The paper makes reference to problems and results obtained by G. Freud during 1953-77.
