A quadrature matrix is defined as a matrix which transforms nodal values of an integrand to nodal values of a definite integral at the same nodal points. The construction of such matrices is discussed briefly. The use of such matrices in the formulation and solution of large deflection problems of the elastica is described. Examples are given of the use of quadrature matrices in the solution of problems with point loads, distributed loads, and follower loads. Solutions are also given for cases with initial curvature and undefined length. The accuracy of solution is assessed where possible, and appears to be generally satisfactory for using modest numbers of variables.
