An initial-boundary value problem for the \(n\)-dimensional semi-linear wave equation with the nonlinear source term \(l(t,y,x(t,y))\) and nonlinear dissipation and source terms \(g(t,y,x_t(t,y))\) and \(h(t,y,x(t,y))\) in the boundary Neumann condition, is studied. One is concerned with the problem of global existence of a solution over a finite interval \([0,T]\), for different types of nonlinearities \(l\), \(g\) and \(h\). Under a set of regularity assumptions a global existence result together with a continuous dependence of solutions on initial data are proved. At the end a Variational principle and duality result is formulated. The study is done by means of a variational method. One investigates first the existence of a solution for the system consisting of the Neumann equation and an initial condition, and this is done with the help of a functional defined on the boundary. Next, one solves the system consisting of the wave equation, initial conditions and the solution on the boundary from the previous system, and this is done by using a functional defined on the interior domain.
