The authors of this paper study the following elliptic Dirichlet boundary value problem: \[ -\triangle_N u =\lambda f(u),\;u>0 \text{\;in \;} \Omega \text{\;and\;} u=0 \text{\;on\;} \partial \Omega, \leqno{(P_\lambda)} \] where \(\Omega \subset {\mathbb R}^N\) is a bounded domain, \(N\geq 2\) and \(f(t)\) is of the form \(h(t)e^{\frac{N}{N-1}}\). By using a combination of monotone iteration techniques and a generalized mountain pass theorem, for certain classes of functions \(h(t)\), the authors prove that there is \(\Lambda>0\) such that \((P_\lambda)\) has one solution if \(\lambda=\Lambda\) and two solutions if \(\lambda \in (0, \Lambda)\), one of which converges to \(0\) as \(\lambda \rightarrow 0\), but \((P_\lambda)\) has no solution if \(\lambda >\Lambda\). For some other kind of \(h(t)\), the authors prove that \((P_\lambda)\) has only one solution for \(\lambda >0\) small, by using shooting method.
