A rational vertex operator algebra is a vertex operator algebra such that any admissible module is a direct sum of simple ordinary modules. A rational vertex operator algebra is called regular if any of its weak modules is a direct sum of simple ordinary modules. The authors give several sufficient conditions under which a rational vertex operator algebra is regular. In particular, they prove the regularity of the following vertex operator algebras: the moonshine module vertex operator algebra and the vertex operator algebras associated with positive definite even lattices, affine Kac-Moody algebras with certain rational levels and the Virasoro algebra with certain rational central charges, respectively.
