The authors examine the use of numerical methods in the study of the solutions of evolution equations which have finite-time unbounded growth. The first objective is to give a simple general procedure which should ensure that reliable conclusions can be drawn when numerical methods are used in the investigation of blowup phenomena. The second is to provide insight into the behaviour of discretizations near blowup time \((t_{\text{max}})\). The applicability of the numerical methods for the radial nonlinear Schrödinger equation is studied.
