The paper aims to establish a mathematical framework for modeling the propagation of plasmon waves, i.e., a resonantly coupled complex of electromagnetic field and electron oscillations, along a cylindrical metallic nanowire. The derived system of equations is solved by means of numerical methods. In particular, the balance between the material loss and gain provided by the external field is analyzed, the respective Poynting vector being directed inward (to the cylindrical axis). Polarization structure and angular momentum of the plasmonic waves are analyzed in detail too.
