The paper deals with totally splittable polytopes. By definition a split of a polytope \(P\) is a regular subdivision with exactly two maximal cells; a polytope is said to be totally splittable if each triangulation (without additional vertices) is a common refinement of splits. In terms of the secondary polytope, the splits of \(P\) correspond to facets of the secondary polytope of \(P\); the total splittability of \(P\) is equivalent to the property that each facet of the secondary polytope of \(P\) arises from a split. The main result provides a classification of totally splittable polytopes. Namely it is shown that the totally splittable polytopes are the simplices, the polygons, the regular crosspolytopes, the prisms over simplices, or joins of these.
