The paper under review is developed in three fundamental Sections. In the first one, it is characterized the semiprime (in a sense) Artinian Lie algebras in terms of certain complementation property for inner ideals. To do that, the authors are motivated by an analogous result for Jordan pairs given in [\textit{O. Loos} and \textit{E. Neher}, ``Complementation of inner ideals in Jordan pairs,'' J. Algebra 166, No. 2, 255--295 (1994; Zbl 0827.17032)], where an inner ideal \(B\) of \(V^{\sigma}\) of a Jordan pair \(V=(V^+,V^-)\) is called complemented if there exists another inner ideal \(C\) of \(V^{-\sigma}\) in such a way that each of them is complemented as submodule by the kernel of the other. In the same reference, a Jordan pair is called complemented if any inner ideal is complemented and it is shown that a Jordan pair (over an arbitrary ring of scalars) is a direct sum of simple Artinian nondegenerate Jordan pairs if and only if it is complemented. Consider now a Lie algebra \(L\), an inner ideal of \(L\) is a submodule \(M\) satisfying \([M,[M,L]]\subset M\). The authors introduce the concepts of complemented inner ideal and complemented Lie algebra in a similar way that the above ones for Jordan pairs. They also prove that a Lie algebra is a direct sum of simple nondegenerate Artinian Lie algebras if and only if it is complemented. To proof this results they make intensively use of the connection between Lie algebras and Jordan pairs provided through the notion of subquotient of a Lie algebra with respect to an abelian inner ideal. The following two sections are devoted, respectively, to describe the Lie inner ideal structure of simple Lie algebras arising from simple associative algebras with nonzero socle, and to give a structure theorem for simple nondegenerate Artinian Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0 or greater than 7.
