A fibration of a closed oriented 3-manifold \(M\) over \(S^1\) induces a symplectic form on \(S^1\times M\). The paper gives a partial answer to the following conjecture stated by \textit{C. H. Taubes} [Doc. Math., J. DMV, Extra Vol. ICM II, 493-504 (1998; Zbl 0899.57020)]: Let \(M\) be a closed, oriented 3-manifold such that \(S^1\times M\) admits a symplectic structure. Then \(M\) fibers over \(S^1\). The main result of the paper is that \(M\) fibers over \(S^1\) if \(M\) contains no fake 3-cells, \(S^1 \times M \) admits a symplectic structure and a Lefschetz fibration. This generalizes a result in [\textit{W. Chen} and \textit{R. Matveyev}, Geom. Topol. 4, 517-535 (2000; Zbl 0968.57012)] where the authors assume that the Lefschetz fibration admits symplectic fibres. The author uses classification results on complex surfaces and Lefschetz fibred 4-manifolds. In particular, a classification result of 4-manifolds of the form \(S^1 \times M\) which admit certain structures or fibrations is proved. Moreover, relations between the geometry of \(M\) and complex structures and Seifert fibrations on \(S^1 \times M\) are studied.
