The following branching random walk on \(\mathbb{R}\) is considered. The process begins with a single particle at the origin; this particle moves to another point of \(\mathbb{R}\) according to a displacement distribution \(W\), where it gives birth to a random number of offsprings, according to a distribution \(Z\). This procedure is then repeated: the particles in a given generation each take a single step according to an independent copy of the same distribution \(W\), and then give birth to the next generation. It is supposed that \(W\) is nonnegative. Let \(M_n\) be the displacement of the leftmost particle in the \(n\)th generation. If the process dies out and there are no particles remaining in the \(n\)th generation, then set \(M_n=\infty\). An explosion is the event that \(\lim_{n\to\infty}M_n< \infty\). In this paper, some characterization of pairs \((Z,W)\) for which an explosion occurs is obtained. Also, under some assumptions, the behaviour of \(M_n\) is investigated, when an explosion does not occur.
