Let \(\mathcal D\) be the usual Dirichlet space of holomorphic functions on the disk. The associated multiplier algebra \(M(\mathcal D)\) is the set of all functions \(\mu\) in \(\mathcal D\) such that \(\mu f\in \mathcal D\) for every \(f\in \mathcal D\). The authors establish within \(M(\mathcal D)\) an analogue to Wolff's theorem in \(H^\infty\) telling us that if \(f,f_j\in H^\infty\) satisfy \(|f|\leq \sum_{j=1}^n |f_j|\), then \(f^3=\sum_{j=1}^n g_jf_j\) for some \(g_j\in H^\infty\). They consider the corresponding problem with infinitely many data in \(M(\mathcal D)\). This generalizes the second author's result in [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 49, No. 1, 123--139 (2004; Zbl 1055.30050)], where \(f\) was the constant function one.
