The authors establish an optimal embedding for nonlinear spaces in terms of weighted Lorentz sequence spaces with weights depending on the democracy functions of basis. Using this, the known embedding for \(N\)-term wavelet approximation in \(L^p\)-, Orlicz- and Lorentz-norm is obtained. The last section is devoted to the study of the democracy function for nonlinear spaces and the greedy classes due to \textit{R. Gribonval} and \textit{M. Nielsen} [East J. Approx. 7, No. 3, 267--285 (2001; Zbl 1090.41510)]. Also, a new counter example is given showing that these two are not equal for most non-democratic unconditional bases.
