A group \(\Gamma\) is of type \(\text{FP}_m\) if there is a projective resolution \(P_m\to P_{m-1}\to\cdots\to P_0\to\mathbb{Z}\) of finitely generated \(\mathbb{Z}\Gamma\)-modules. If \(\Gamma\) is of type \(\text{FP}_m\) for all integers \(m\geq 0\), then \(\Gamma\) is of type \(\text{FP}_\infty\). Every group is of type \(\text{FP}_0\). Type \(\text{FP}_1\) means finite generation. Finite presentation implies \(\text{FP}_2\). The groups of interest in the paper are \(S\)-arithmetic groups \(\Gamma\) where \(S\) is a finite nonempty set of places in a global field of finite characteristic. It is proved that \(\Gamma\) is of type \(\text{FP}_\infty\) if and only if the semisimple rank is 0. For isotropic \(\Gamma\), the numbers \(m\) such that \(\Gamma\) is of type \(\text{FP}_m\) are bounded in terms of the \(S\)-rank.
