The authors use a new approach to estimate the maximum number of limit cycles of some planar polynomial systems. It is based on the controlling of the sign of a function involved in the well-known Bendixson-Dulac criterion for multiple connected regions. By using the transformation to polar coordinates the method is effectively applied to several examples.
