By definition a character \(\theta\) of a finite group \(G\) is called multiplicity-free if \((\theta,\chi)\leq 1\) for all irreducible characters \(\chi\) of \(G\). Motivated by an earlier results of J. Saxl et al. on the multiplicity free characters of the symmetric group, the author classifies the multiplicity free permutation characters of all the symmetric groups of degree at least 66. Further results on Specht filtration of permutation modules defined over fields of prime characteristic are obtained.
