The authors' main result is that, for a von Neumann algebra \(M\) acting on a Hilbert space \(H\), the conditions (i) \(M\) is injective, (ii) \(M\) is the range of a completely bounded projection on \(B(H)\), and (iii) \(M\) is the range of a bounded \(M\)-module projection on \(B(H)\) are equivalent. That (i) \(\Rightarrow\) (ii) follows from work of \textit{J. Tomiyama} [Proc. Japan Acad. 33, 608-612 (1957; Zbl 0081.112 and Zbl 0081.456)] and that (iii) \(\Rightarrow\) (i) follows from results of \textit{J. W. Bunce} and \textit{W. L. Paschke} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 71, 232-236 (1978; Zbl 0396.46054)]. The implication (ii) \(\Rightarrow\) (iii) is proved using a subtle and interesting technique involving averaging of completely bounded mappings which may have applications to other problems.
