Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be an algebra over a field \(\mathbb{F}\). For a scalar \(\xi \in \mathbb{F}\) and \(A, B \in \mathcal{A}\), the binary operation \([A,B]_{\xi}=AB-\xi BA\) is called \(\xi\)-Lie product of \(A\) and \(B\). An additive (resp., a linear) map \(L: \mathcal{A}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}\) is called an additive (resp., a linear) \(\xi\)-Lie derivation if \(L([AB]_{\xi})=[L(A),B]_{\xi}+ [A,L(B)]_{\xi}\). Particularly, if \(\xi=1\), \(L\) is a Lie derivation; if \(\xi=0\), \(L\) is a derivation; if \(\xi=-1\), then \(L\) is a Jordan derivation. Recently, there have been a number of papers on the study of conditions under which derivations of rings or operator algebras can be completely determined by the action on some elements concerning products (cf.\ \textit{M. Brešar} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A, Math. 137, No. 1, 9--21 (2007; Zbl 1130.16018)], \textit{T.-K. Lee } [Pac. J. Math. 216, No. 2, 293--301 (2004; Zbl 1078.16038)], the authors [Linear Algebra Appl. 429, No. 8-9, 1851--1863 (2008; Zbl 1153.47062)]). In the present paper, the authors characterize some additive (linear) maps on \(\mathcal{A}\) when \(\mathcal{A}\) is a von~Neumann algebra without central summands of type \(I_{1}\). For \(\mathcal{M}\) being a von~Neumann algebra without central summands of type \(I_{1}\), the authors study the structure of additive (linear) maps \(L: \mathcal{M}\rightarrow \mathcal{M}\) that satisfy \(L([AB]_{\xi})=[L(A),B]_{\xi}+ [A,L(B)]_{\xi}\) for any \(A,B\) with \(AB=0\) and \(\xi\in \mathbb{C}\). In the case where \(L\) is is additive, the authors prove that there exists an additive derivation \(\varphi : \mathcal{M}\rightarrow\mathcal{M}\) such that: {\parindent=2em\begin{itemize}\item[(1)] If \(\xi=1\), the \(\xi\)-Lie derivation is such that \(L=\varphi + f\) where \(f: \mathcal{M}\rightarrow \mathcal{Z(M)}\) is an additive map into the center that vanishes each commutator \([AB]\) whenever \(AB=0\). \item[(2)] If \(\xi=0\), the derivation \(L\) is such that for all \(A \in \mathcal{A}\), \(L(A)= \varphi(A) + L(I)A\). \item[(3)] If \(\xi \in \mathbb{C}\) is rational (i.e., \(\xi\) has rational real and imaginary parts) and \(\xi\neq 0,1\), then \(L=\varphi\). \item[(4)] If \(\xi\in\mathcal{C}\) is not rational, then \(\varphi(\xi I)=\xi L(I)\) and \(L(A)=\varphi(A) + L(I)A\). \end{itemize}} For the linear case, they show that there exists some \(T\in \mathcal{M}\) such that the previous results are verified for \(\xi=0\) and \(\xi=1\) if one replaces \(\varphi(A)\) by \(AT-TA\). If \(\xi\neq 0,1\), then \(L(A)= AT-TA\). Among the main results, the authors also give some conditions to have an additive derivation and a \(\xi\)-Lie derivation.
