The main result of the paper under review says that, for generic complex polynomials \(f_1,...,f_{n+1}\) in \(n+2\) variables with the same Newton polytope \(\Delta\) such that the complete intersection curve \(C=\{f_1=...=f_{n+1}=0\}\subset ({\mathbb C}^*)^{n+2}\) is smooth, and its projection to the coordinate plane \(P=\{z_1=...=z_n=0\}\) is nodal in \(({\mathbb C}^*)^2\subset P\) is nodal, then the number of nodes of the projection is given by an explicit closed formula in terms of the volume of \(\Delta\) and some other related lattice polytopes. This setting falls out of the range of the classical theory of Thom polynomials, since the ambient spaces are not compact. The author considers a suitable compactification, which requires a thorough study of singularities at infinity of the considered curve and of its projection. A tropical counterpart of the considered problem is discussed as well.
