The authors study the non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with \(N\) higher order non-linear correction terms (usually \(N\leq 8\)). In the case of \(N\) non-linear order terms, with \(6\leq N \leq 8\), the authors study the modulation instability (the stability of the perturbed solutions of the form \((A+\epsilon p)e^{ikz+wt}\) around the plane wave solution \(Ae^{ikz+wt}\)). In the case of reduced NLS with a sixth order non-linear term, the authors investigate a special class of solutions, the rouge waves. After expressing rouge waves of arbitrary order via an appropriate Darboux transform, the authors obtain the exact rouge wave solutions of orders \(1,2\) and \(3\). Furthermore, spectral properties of the linearized NLS near a rouge wave are studied within the paper.
