The authors study the algebra of almost inner derivations of a Lie algebra over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not two, and also over the real numbers. They work with 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras with 2-dimensional derived algebra. They use that these algebras can be described by skew-symmetric matrix pencils and their invariant polynomials and elementary divisors. Explicit formulas are found for the dimension for these algebras.
