Following \textit{W. K. Nicholson} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 229, 269--278 (1977; Zbl 0352.16006)], an element of an associative unital ring \(R\) is called \textit{clean} if it is a sum of a unit and of an idempotent. Then \(R\) is also said to be \textit{clean} if each element of \(R\) is clean. As usual, the symbol \(R[G]\) stands for the group of \(R\) over a multiplicative group \(G\). Clean group rings were firstly studied by \textit{J. Han} and \textit{W. K. Nicholson} [Commun. Algebra 29, No. 6, 2589--2595 (2001; Zbl 0989.16015)]. In the commutative case, a recent progress was made by \textit{N. A. Immormino} and \textit{W. Wm. McGovern} [J. Algebra 405, 168--178 (2014; Zbl 1305.16022)]. In the paper under review, the question of when a commutative group ring \(R[G]\) over a local ring \(R\) is clean is investigated. The main results are selected in Theorems 1.1, 1.3, 2.2, 2.3, 3.4, 4.5, which proofs use some machinery from number theory, especially the cyclotomic extensions of fields. Some interesting examples, namely Examples 3.5 and 4.6, are also given. The work in the article is well organized and structured.
