The main result of the present paper is to show that the principal minors of a real symmetric matrix satisfy the algebraic equations which are derived from the \(2\times 2\times 2\)-hyperdeterminant. Such a problem is motivated by a number of results and problems in matrix theory. Furthermore, information about principal minors is important in probability theory, in particular in determinantal point processes.
