Summary: We show that there exists a family of simply connected, symplectic 4-manifolds such that the (Poincaré dual of the) canonical class admits both connected and disconnected symplectic representatives. This answers a question by \textit{R. Fintushel} and \textit{R. Stern} [Turk. J. Math. 25, No. 1, 137--145 (2001; Zbl 0977.57032)].
