In this paper Kashiwara's crystal bases of representations for quantum groups ``at \(q=0\)'' are used to explore certain modules for \(U_ q(\widehat{sl}_ n)\). First, this leads to a new proof of a theorem by \textit{E. Date, M. Jimbo, A. Kuniba, T. Miwa} and \textit{M. Okada} [Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 19, 149-191 (1989; Zbl 0704.17013)]. Next, the authors prove that the crystal graphs for finite tensor products of \(\ell\)-th symmetric tensor representations of \(U_ q(sl_ n)\) approximate the crystal graph of level \(\ell\) representations of \(U_ q(\widehat{sl}_ n)\). Finally, they also prove certain combinatorial identities related to the so-called RSOS models.
