In a series of his papers, the author has considered the class number of the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field [cf. this journal 65, 318-319 (1989; Zbl 0704.11039), 68, 41-42 (1992; Zbl 0771.11043) and 237- 238 (1992; Zbl 0771.11044)], and provided sufficient conditions for the class number of the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field to be equal to the class number of a given subfield. In this paper, as the subfield he considers the quartic field. Namely, for two odd primes \(p,q\) satisfying \(p = 8q + 1\), let \(K\) be the maximal real subfield of the \(p\)-th cyclotomic field and \(k\) be the unique quartic subfield of \(K\). Then, under some assumptions on \(q\), he proves that if \(h(K)<p\) and \(h(L) \geq 5\), then \(h(K) = h(L)\) holds, where \(h(K)\) and \(h(L)\) are the class number of \(K\) and \(L\) respectively.
