The author proves a general theorem expressing irreducible symplectic and orthogonal characters as ratios of determinants. Special cases of this theorem include \textit{A. Regev's} bideterminantal formula for Schur functions [Isr. J. Math. 80, No. 1-2, 155-160 (1992; Zbl 0786.20005)] and a new bideterminantal formula for \textit{R. A. Proctor's} intermediate symplectic characters [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 324, No. 2, 655-692 (1991; Zbl 0729.22018)].
