The well-known parity space method for fault detection and isolation is generalized to the continuous-time case, where it is shown that the parity equation (PE) is essentially a deadbeat observation problem. Then a sensor fault isolation algorithm is developed as the continuous counterpart to the discrete-time case. Furthermore, an actuator fault isolation problem is considered, where its solution is obtained by an application of the PE concept. By a numerical example -- illustrating both sensor and actuator fault isolation -- the feasibility of the algorithm is illustrated.
