Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic \(p>0\), and let \(\gamma\) be a \(k\)-automorphism of the field \(k((t))\). Define \(i(\gamma) =v_{k((t))} ((\gamma t-t)/t)\) and for \(m\geq 0\) define \(i_m=i (\gamma^{p^m})\). By using Wintenberger's theory of fields of norms, the authors improve results of \textit{K. Keating} [J. Number Theory 41, 314-321 (1992; Zbl 0772.12005)] concerning the upper bounds for the \(i_m\) in certain cases when \(\gamma\) has infinite order. Thus, the authors prove that if \(p\nmid i_0\) and \(i_1< (p^2- p+1) i_0\) then \(i_m= i_0 +bp +bp^2+ \cdots +bp^m\) for all \(m\geq 1\), where \(b=(i_1- i_0)/p\).
