The authors study the nonlinear Dirichlet problem \[ -\Delta u= (\nabla\psi(x),\nabla u)+ a(x) u^{q-1}+ b(x) u^{s- 1}\quad\text{in }\Omega,\tag{1} \] \[ u= 0\quad\text{on }\partial\Omega \] in which \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) with smooth boundary \(\partial\Omega\), \(b\) is nonpositive and \(1< q\), \(s< 2n/(n- 2)\). Of particular interest is the affect of the regularity of \(\psi\) on the existence of solutions of this problem specifically, granted suitable assumptions about the exponents \(q\) and \(s\) and coefficient functions \(a\) and \(b\)\dots (i) if \(\psi\in C(\overline\Omega)\cap W^{1,n}(\Omega)\) then (1) has a weak solution \(u\); if in addition \(\psi\in C^\alpha(\overline\Omega)\) then \(u\in C^{1,\alpha}(\overline\Omega)\); (ii) if \(\psi\) is smooth only outside some nonempty set then (1) may have no admissible solutions, i.e. which satisfy a given generalized integral identity. Proofs of the results are direct variational methods.
