The authors propose and study a delay equation model for two coupled delay-line oscillators. In dimensionless form the system is \[ w_1'(s) = -a_1 f(w_1(s-\frac{\pi}{2})) - c_1 f(w_2(s-\frac{\pi}{2}-d_1)), \] \[ w_2'(s) = -a_2 f(w_2(s-\frac{\pi}{2}-d_2)) - c_2 f(w_1(s-\frac{\pi}{2}-d_3)), \] where \(f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) is a smooth and odd function such that \(f'(0)=1\), \(w_1,w_2 \in\mathbb{R}\), and \(a_1,a_2,c_1,c_2,d_1,d_2,d_3\) are some parameters. First, the delay equations are reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations on a finite-dimensional center manifold in the corresponding infinite-dimensional state space. After averaging the finite-dimensional system, a bifurcation analysis is performed showing a complex structure of oscillatory behavior. Particular attention is paid to the case of two adjacently mounted, identically built surface acoustic wave delay-line oscillators.
