The authors studied the asymptotic behaviour of Szasz operators for locally bounded functions at the point \(x\) where the lateral limits of \(f\) exist and are finite. By this way ,they generalized a result due to \textit{F. Cheng} [J. Approximation Theory 40, 226--241 (1984; Zbl 0532.41026)]. When the approximated function is continuous at \( x\) ,the estimate essentially is the best possible. The main result of the paper ( the asymptotic estimate)is obtained using techniques and results of probability theory (the asymptotic form of the central limit theorem).
