The authors use the multiresolution triangulation meshes to represent 2D piecewise smooth functions. They show that within the so-called horizon class of functions, the normal mesh representation has an optimal asymptotic error decay rate as the number of terms in the representation grows. Some experimental results on synthetic and real images by this approach are also provided.
