The authors' aim is to describe a deformation that connects a family of examples of minimal surfaces with planar ends with a family of complete minimal surfaces with helicoidal ends. The latter family contains the singly-periodic genus-one helicoid constructed by \textit{D. Hoffman, H. Karcher} and \textit{F. Wei} [Comment. Math. Helv. 74, No. 2, 248--279 (1999; Zbl 0958.53006)]. The family of minimal surfaces with planar ends mentioned above is that constructed by \textit{F. López} and the second author [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 69, No. 3, 362--402 (2000; Zbl 0997.53004) and Commun. Anal. Geom. 9, No. 4, 683--723 (2001; Zbl 1026.53002)]; it is based on an earlier construction of \textit{F. López, M. Ritoré} and \textit{F. Wei} [J. Differ. Geom. 47, No. 2, 376--397 (1997; Zbl 0938.53004)]. The work under review utilizes the Weierstrass representation and the bulk of the paper describes the requisite computations.
