\textit{H. Iwaniec} and \textit{J. Pintz} [Monatsh. Math. 98, 115-143 (1984; Zbl 0544.10040)] showed that the difference between consecutive primes satisfies \(p_{n+1}-p_ n\ll p_ n^{\theta}\) with \(\theta =11/20- 1/406.\) In the present paper the argument is refined to give \(\theta =11/20-1/384,\) and indeed, if Selberg's conjecture on eigenvalues of the non-Euclidean Laplacian holds, \(\theta =11/20-1/380\).
