Let \(\mu=\{\mu_k\}_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}\) be a discrete and positive measure on \(\mathbb{Z}\). A positive operator \(T:{\ell}^2(\mathbb{Z},\mu)\to {\ell}^2(\mathbb{Z},\mu)\), defined by \[ T(x)(j)=\sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}}a_{jk}x_k\mu_k, \] is said to be \(\lambda\)-averaging if \(T(\mathbf{1})\equiv \lambda \mathbf{1}\), where \[ T(\mathbf{1})=\sup\{T(x):x\in{\ell}^2(\mathbb{Z},\mu),\, 0\leq x\leq 1\}. \] The main result of the paper states that a necessary and sufficient condition to find a positive isometric \(\lambda\)-averaging operator on \({\ell}^2(\mathbb{Z},\mu)\) is the existence of a partition \(\{I_j\}_{j\in\mathbb{Z}}\) of \(\mathbb{Z}\) such that \[ \frac{\mu(I_j)}{\mu_j}=\frac{1}{\lambda^2} \] for all \(j\in\mathbb{Z}\). This result is applied to obtain a complete description of the set \(\sigma^+_A(\mu)\) of all values \(\lambda\geq 0\) for which there exists a positive isometric \(\lambda\)-averaging operator in the case \(\mu_k=r\chi_A(k)+\chi_B(k),\;k\in \mathbb{Z}\), where \(A,B\) is a partition of \(\mathbb{Z}\), \(B\) is an infinite set, and \(r>0\).
