The author defines the major index of a set partition and sets it into the context of existing q-counts of set partitions, that is to say, versions of the q-Stirling numbers. Bijections between the major index and existing q-statistics are given. An extension to set partitions is made for Rawlings' rmaj statistic which interpolates between the major index and the inversion number for permutations. Bivariate Stirling numbers are also examined.
