Recall that a topological space \(X\) is countably tight if for each subset \(A\), each point in the closure of \(A\) is also in the closure of some countable subset of \(A\). Further, \(X\) is said to be quasi-Suslin (resp., \(K\)-analytic) if there is an upper semicontinuous map \(T\) from \({\mathbb N}^{\mathbb N}\) into the family of all subsets (resp., all compact subsets) of \(X\) such that \(X=\bigcup\{T(\alpha): \alpha \in {\mathbb N}^{\mathbb N}\}\). Let \(E\) be a locally convex topological vector space. We say that \(E\) belongs to the class \(\mathfrak C\) if there is a family \(\{A_\alpha: \alpha \in {\mathbb N}^{\mathbb N}\}\) of subsets of its topological dual \(E'\) such that \(E'=\bigcup\{A_\alpha: \alpha \in {\mathbb N}^{\mathbb N}\}\); \(A_\alpha \subseteq A_\beta\) if \(\alpha(i) \leq \beta(i)\) for all \(i \in \mathbb N\); sequences in each \(A_\alpha\) are equicontinuous. The authors study the following two properties: {\parindent=7mm \begin{itemize}\item[(K)] If \(E\) is countably tight, then so is the weak dual space \((E, \sigma(E,E'))\), and \item[(V)] \((E,\sigma(E,E'))\) is countably tight iff the weak dual \((E',\sigma(E',E))\) is \(K\)-analytic. \end{itemize}} A result due to Kaplansky declares that (K) holds in the class \(\mathcal K\) of locally spaces whose weak duals are countable unions of compact sets. Further, Valdivia set (V) in the class \(\mathcal V\) of strong duals of Fréchet spaces in [\textit{M.\,Valdivia}, ``Topics in locally convex spaces'' (North-Holland Mathematics Studies 67, Notas de Matematica 85; Amsterdam etc.:\ North-Holland) (1982; Zbl 0489.46001)]. In [J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 269, No.\,2, 500--518 (2002; Zbl 1012.46007)], \textit{B.\,Cascales, J.\,Kakol} and \textit{S.\,A.\thinspace Saxon} showed that both (K) and (V) hold in the class of \(\mathfrak C\), and asked if there are there nice classes other than \(\mathfrak C\) for which (K) holds?. The main result of the present paper answers this question by showing that (K) holds in the class \(\mathfrak M\) of locally convex spaces having quasi-Suslin weak duals. In addition, it is shown that \(\mathfrak M\) is substantially larger than \(\mathfrak C\), which settles a problem in [the authors, J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 324, No.\,2, 862--881 (2006; Zbl 1114.46001)]. Some results on quasi-LB strong duals are also given.
