The author presents a local error indicator for the mimetic finite difference method for diffusion problems on general polyhedral meshes. The diffusion problem is expressed as a system of a vector and a scalar field. The error indicator is defined elementwise from the local residual and the error due to the discretization of the right hand side of the equation system. Under some reasonable regularity assumptions on the computational domain, the mesh and the differential equation, global reliability and local efficiency for the proposed error indicator are proved. Global reliability here means that the error in the numerical solution can be estimated from the error indicators in some function space norm and local effiency that the error indicator can be estimated by the error in the numerical solution elementwise.
