This is the first of a series of papers in which the authors initiate and develop the theory of reflection monoids, inspired by the theories of groups of Lie type, reflection groups, the Renner monoids of reductive algebraic monoids and Solomon's rook monoids. The main results identify quite a few important inverse semigroups as reflection monoids. The authors also introduce certain examples and determine their orders. The article is well written.
