An initial-boundary value problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, for the wave equation with a nonlinear damping term, is considered. The purpose is to study the stability properties of solutions. The same problem has been investigated by the authors for an IVP for the damped wave equation on a compact surface in \(\mathbb R^3\), without boundary in [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 361, No. 9, 4561--4580 (2009; Zbl 1179.35052)]. Another article of the authors on this subject has been published in [Methods Appl. Anal. 15, No. 4, 405--426 (2008; Zbl 1183.35200)]. One intends here to generalize the previous obtained results to \(n\)-dimensional Riemann manifolds with or without boundary. Actually since the assumptions and the main results are the same as in the above mentioned paper, we can speak more about an adaptation of results and not really of a generalization. For the proof, entire parts of the article, the main ones, for instance sections 2, 4, and 7 are copied, word by word, from the mentioned paper.
